Not That "Kitty Kat"
An Audio Poem

A mutual friend of ours
didn't know who we were,
and she asked... casually,
so, I told her.
The gasp in her voice made
me laugh.
"I would have NEVER guessed."
Yeah, I wouldn't have, either.
That was then, it damn sure
ain't now.
I am learning that letting go
of a woman who wanted to
be let go is the freest freedom
that could have ever freed
someone.
I remember you dropping
close to a grand on a
Beyoncé concert, but failed to
drop me more of your time
after I dropped $500.00
on luggage that's not going
anywhere.
Trips... we'll never take together.
Sunsets... we'll never see together.
Breaking headboards in the
middle of the night...
That'll never be us.
And as I settle in the deepest
parts of my foam-enhanced
chair for my aching back,
I remember the gift certificate
you got for me to get a massage
that I keep forgetting to use...
I keep forgetting to use...
Or maybe I'm not using it
because it came from you--and
I don't want to turn around
and see one more thing
that has YOU all over it.
I can't.
I won't.
I shouldn't.
I’m done.

Sweet illustration, dear lady — made me smile! 💚
“Breaking headboards in the / middle of the night...” sounded, um, more exuberant than I would have expected. But what do I know? So I asked my ex and her wife.
LINDA: Sorry, Jacky-poo, not at our age, lol!
CAROL: WHO TOLD YOU ABOUT THE BROKEN HEADBOARDS???
(Carol and I share some similarities; engineering backgrounds, weird senses of humor, and a deep fondness for Linda being just three.)
